In 1938, routine reassignments separated Judy from many of her friends, including the Royal Navy officers who had adopted her from the Shanghai kennel. Then in June 1939 the Gnat, launched in 1915 and rapidly aging, was replaced by the HMS Grasshopper, a larger, more efficient vessel. When some of the Gnat’s crew moved over, Judy went with them. When Britain formally entered the war on September 3, the HMS Grasshopper set sail for Singapore.
